Dear Parents:

I would like to welcome your child to the wonderful world of kindergarten.  I am looking forward to a great year, working together with you and your child.  This will be a year of growth and development for your child.  Together, we can make learning a positive experience for your child.

The following are a few things that will help the year go smoothly:

School Hours

School starts at 8:10 and the tardy bell rings at 8:15 every day.  Please try to have your child arrive to school on time.  Dismissal on Monday is at 1:10 and Tuesday-Friday is at 2:10.  If there is a change in your child’s method of going home, please send a note or phone the school.  We have to proceed with the last instructions we received from the parent.

Lunch

Lunch is at 11:00 on Monday and 11:10 Tuesday-Friday.  Students may bring lunch money in the morning and give it to me.  Parents can pay at any time in the office.  It is helpful to enclose any money in an envelope with your child’s name and the number of days for which you are paying.  The cost is $2.25 per day, including milk.  Milk is $.25 for those bringing their lunch.  Please remember that lunch money must be paid in advance.  No charges are allowed.  Lunch menus will be sent home every month.  Applications for free or reduced lunches and/or breakfast are enclosed in the beginning of the year packet.  Occasionally, you may want to come and eat lunch with your child.  You are welcome to do so.  Adult lunches are $4.00.  Adult lunch tickets may be purchased in the office.

Breakfast

Our school does have a breakfast program.  Breakfast is served everyday in the cafeteria, before school, starting at 7:50.  The cost is $.75.

Snacks

Snacks are allowed at the 10:00 recess if your child has a need for a small, nutritious snack.  Please do not send sugary things like donuts, candy, or cookies.  Crackers, popcorn, fruit, graham crackers, or cereal would be fine.

Latchkey

We have an excellent after school program here at Sundale.  Information about Latchkey is available in the office.

Parent/Teacher Relationship

A good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success.  Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, newsletters, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences.  Most communication will be through the folders that go home each Friday.  I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I am available after 2:15 at Sundale most days.  If I am not available, please leave a message and I will return your call.  The school phone number is 688-7451 and my e-mail address is lisa.fournier@sundale.org .

Friday Folders

Folders will be going home each Friday with your child’s work.  At that time we will also send home newsletters, calendars, notices, and other information.  Please take time to

look over the papers with your child.  Ask questions and encourage your child to speak in complete sentences.  This is a great opportunity for you to praise your child and show them that you are proud of all of the hard work they put into school.  Please return the folder with your child to school each Monday so that we may have it for the following Friday.  Feel free to return any notes you would like me to see in the folder on Monday, as well.

Absences

If your child is absent for any reason, I must have a note explaining the absence, or you may phone the school office.  If you know in advance that your child will miss a week or more of school, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can put together some assignments and your child can get credit for the days missed and also stay up with the class.

Rest Time

We have a short rest time each day.  Your child may wish to bring a towel, a very small blanket, or a very small pillow to lie on during this time.  Their item must be able to fit in a shoe box size cubby with no overhang.

Spirit Day

Every Friday is “Spirit Day” at Sundale School.  The students are encouraged to wear our school colors of blue and white.

Snack Bar

On the first and third Fridays of the month, the Sundale PTA has a fund-raiser by sponsoring a snack bar.  We also have snack bar when we have sports games here at Sundale.  They sell various treats such as: cookies, candy, water, and sports drinks.  The children enjoy this Friday afternoon treat time.  Most items are $.50.  There are some things for $.25.  If your child would like to participate, you can send some money in an envelope with your child’s name on the outside.  If you choose to do this, $1.00 is more than enough.  We collect the money at the start of the day ad return it to the student as we are going to the snack bar.  Please note that this is an optional activity.

Homework

For the first month or so of school I will have a short homework assignment going home each day, starting Thursday, August 13th.  After that there will be a weekly homework packet that goes home on Monday and is due on Friday.  The homework will be something we are working on in class that day/week and will give your child the opportunity to have some additional practice.  Your child will probably need some guidance, but should be able to complete the assignment on his/her own.  This will also give you a chance to see areas in which your child needs some extra practice.  Please be sure to check your child’s homework when he/she is finished

Parent Participation

This is extremely important!  You play a major role in your child’s education.  I will need parent volunteers who can assist in the classroom, in the parent room, or at home with special projects for our class.  If you cannot volunteer on a regular basis, throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations.  I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies or treats.  Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school.  I will begin having parent volunteers in the classroom after the first month of school.  This gives the class the time needed to establish the routines and expectations before introducing other adults into the classroom.  Giving us this month in the classroom without parent help is essential and will make the year flow more smoothly for all.  I would like to thank you in advance for all of your support this school year.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR!

Mrs. Fournier
