Homework

A homework schedule will be sent home every Monday. This schedule details the homework schedule for the entire week.

Reading passages, spelling and sight words need to be practiced all week for Friday's tests. Here are a few reading tips.

Reading Tips

Tips for Decoding and Reading

Here are a few tips to help your child decode and sound out words.  Have them use this sheet when they read daily at home.  There is also a list of words that they should learn to read.  I hope this is helpful to you.

When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking.

Example: coat (the “a” is silent and lets the “o” say its name.) Additional examples:  rain, soap, and mean.

Silent “e”

Many times the last letter in a word is “e”.  The “e” can be silent and allow the first vowel in the word to say its name.  Example:  cane (the “e” is silent and the “a” says its name.) Additional examples:  came, plane, and shine.

Look for endings: s, ed, er, est, and ing.

Endings can make a word appear very different.  When you see an ending at the end of a word cover it up and sound out the remaining word.  Example:  singing (this word has the ending “ing”.  Cover up the “ing” and sound out the remaining word.  You should be able to read “sing” then add the “ing” to it.  Now say “singing”.  Additional examples:  taller, played, sits, smartest, and looking.

Sight words

I gave each of you a list of the 100 high frequency words that your child needs to learn by the end of 1st grade.  The sooner they are able to read these words the better.  I am hoping that they will learn them by the end of the second trimester.  I have included a list of additional words that will be useful to the children below.  You may notice that some of these words are on their original 100 words list.
