Welcome to the Sundale Ag science web page. Sundale Ag is a very special place! We take lots of pride into what we have created over the past 12 years. It is a place where kids learn how to plant plants, take care of animals and learn how to do manual labor! Good hard work has never been so much fun as it is in our garden. I have had many parents let me know that it is amazing how their child will work so hard in our garden and it’s almost impossible to get them off the couch when at home. Not only do we learn about plants, animals are a big thing also. We have chickens that supply fresh eggs in the spring and summer, we sell them to our parents and teachers. We also have a variety of rabbits and a pond full of Koi fish. The kids learn how to set up drip lines dig trenches, prune trees, landscape and lots of hula hoeing! Don’t forget the raking! I have taught them that it is quite an art to rake properly “just the grass and weeds, not dirt!” Learning how to pop and lift the rake. We have one area in our secret garden finished and will soon be starting a second. Hopefully it will be “snow white and the seven dwarfs” We are excited about that. The broccoli garden was a huge success, I think about every child took home a bunch to have for dinner not to mention we supplied quite a bit for the cafeteria. We also sold to parents after school. Our broccoli can’t be beat. The herb garden continues to be one of the favorites for the younger students, they love to pick and take it home in their backpacks, I’m sure plenty of parents have found a very smelly back pack. In the classes K-4th they have their individual class gardens. In fall I let them decide what they would like to plant, always winter veggies and lots of flowers. We are just now eating the carrots. We do not plant summer gardens for the simple reason we are not here to harvest when the time comes. So I encourage the kids to plant a few things at their homes for summer, a couple of tomatoes maybe a pepper or two and a few squash. Remember now’s the time! I just finished my home garden and I am waiting anxiously for my okra to germinate! We are just finishing making hanging baskets for Mother’s day we will be selling them in May. They will range in price from 15.00 to 30.00. They are Moss lined and filled with beautiful flowers! I’m sure many of you have noticed our two chickens that have the run of the school, Travis and Merlene, we love them very much and they have been pets for a few years I will explain how we acquired them. Some of you may remember our wonderful past teacher of Sundale ,Merelene Kuykendall. Well one day she called and told me they had a lovely little hen that had been running loose in their neighborhood and wondered if I would be interested. Of course we would! So that’s how Merlene became one of us, poor thing was so lonely we had to get her a husband that’s when one of my students Travis Freeman, offered us a beautiful rooster. And now you know how we came to have Travis and Merlene. The ag Science classroom is another wonderful place to visit. We have a number of beautiful reptiles, two chinchillas and a very noisy cocktail. During the rainy time or very hot we have a classroom to learn in. Come visit the garden anytime we welcome you! Thank you for your time, Mrs. Penny
